It can also become a thief.
The Hourglass That Stole Tomorrow began with the idea that a person might gain access to more time while losing the ability to inhabit the time already given.
We often imagine tomorrow as the place where life will finally begin. Tomorrow we will rest, speak, change, forgive, decide, create, or become ready. Hope can live there, but so can avoidance.
Fear also lives ahead of us. We rehearse losses that have not occurred. We build entire emotional realities around possibilities. The body remains in the present while attention is consumed by a future that may never arrive.
The hourglass offered a clear magical object for this tension. Sand moves visibly. Time appears measurable. Turn the glass and the future seems temporarily organized.
But what if the hourglass did not merely count time? What if it took tomorrow each time someone tried to control it?
The emotional rule became less about time travel and more about presence. A character may seek certainty, preparation, or additional time. Yet every attempt to secure tomorrow weakens their relationship with today.
This book helped me articulate a central belief in the series: possibility has value only when it eventually becomes life.
The future is necessary. We plan, protect, dream, and prepare. But the imagined future cannot be allowed to consume every present moment in its name.
The hourglass also reflects the temptation to bargain with uncertainty. If we could know what comes next, perhaps we could avoid grief or guarantee love. Yet perfect foreknowledge might change the very choices that make a life meaningful.
Love, especially, cannot exist only as a future promise. It must be practiced in present tense. The person beside us cannot be loved entirely through plans for later.
Writing this book required me to consider the difference between intention and control. Intention guides attention. Control attempts to eliminate uncertainty.
A simple ritual can help us choose an intention. It cannot make tomorrow obey.
The hourglass steals tomorrow because tomorrow was never meant to be held too tightly. It was meant to arrive, one present moment at a time.
The character’s task is not to stop caring about what comes next. It is to notice what has already arrived.
There is a life directly in front of us. The future may shape it, but only the present can be lived.
A Simple Tea Spell for Returning Attention To The Day In Front Of You
This gentle intention ritual uses exactly three everyday pantry ingredients. It is not a promise of a particular outcome. Its purpose is to pause, focus your attention, and choose how you want to meet the day.
Three ingredients
- 1 cup tea of choice
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice
- Honey or sugar to taste
Optional ritual tools
These are not ingredients and are not required.
- One white tealight candle
- One citrine crystal, or any small stone that feels meaningful
- A notebook or scrap of paper
The ritual
Prepare your tea as you normally would. Add each ingredient slowly, giving it a simple meaning as it enters the cup.
As you stir, say:
I do not need to see the entire path.
I choose the next honest step.
What is mine to carry will become clear through attention.
If using a white tealight, light it before drinking and let it represent clarity rather than certainty. If using a crystal, place it beside the cup as a physical reminder of your intention. Neither is required.
Take three unhurried sips. After the third, write one sentence beginning with:
Today, I will give my attention to...
Keep the sentence small enough to live rather than merely admire.
Pantry-magic note
The three ingredients are symbolic, not prescriptive. You may substitute an equivalent pantry item, but keep the finished spell to exactly three ingredients. The ritual belongs to the attention you bring, not to perfect supplies.
