Who Is Missing From the Table?

Book Seven grew from family tables, inherited rituals, and the way memory can make an empty chair feel occupied.

Some memories arrive as rooms. Others arrive as meals.

The Table Where Memory Waits began with the emotional gravity of the family table. Tables hold repetition: the same chair, the same dish, the same argument, the same silence, the same person serving everyone else before sitting down.

They also hold absence.

After someone is gone, the table remembers their place. A recipe can restore a voice for a moment. A chipped cup may contain more family history than a formal photograph. The ordinary objects surrounding a meal become vessels for people, roles, and expectations.

I wanted the seventh book to explore memory through nourishment. What feeds us is rarely only food. We are nourished by attention, tradition, belonging, recognition, and the feeling that there is a place prepared for us.

We are also shaped by what was withheld.

The magical table became a location where memory does not vanish when the people leave. It waits. It may offer a visitor another encounter with what was shared, unsaid, or misunderstood.

But returning to a remembered table is complicated. Family memory is rarely unanimous. One person remembers safety. Another remembers obligation. One remembers abundance. Another remembers who performed the labor that made abundance possible.

More than one truth can sit at the same table.

This book allowed me to write directly into inherited patterns. Family rituals can carry wisdom, love, and continuity. They can also carry roles no one consciously chose. The eldest daughter serves. The quiet person keeps peace. The grieving person changes the subject. The family story protects certain people and erases others.

The table does not judge those patterns. It reveals them.

The character must decide what to continue. A tradition does not become sacred merely because it is old. Nor must it be discarded simply because it is imperfect.

We can keep the recipe and change the seating arrangement.

We can honor the person who taught us while refusing the silence they also inherited.

Writing this book helped me see the series as a long conversation about what we carry forward. Memory is not passive. Each act of remembrance selects, arranges, and gives meaning.

The table waits because memory waits for our participation. It asks who is invited, who is missing, who has always served, and who is finally ready to sit down.

A place at the table is not only inherited. Sometimes it must be claimed.

A Simple Coffee Spell for Honoring What Nourished You Without Remaining Bound To It

This gentle intention ritual uses exactly three everyday pantry ingredients. It is not a promise of a particular outcome. Its purpose is to pause, focus your attention, and choose how you want to meet the day.

Three ingredients

  • 1 cup brewed coffee
  • 1 teaspoon maple syrup or brown sugar
  • One tiny pinch of salt

Optional ritual tools

These are not ingredients and are not required.

  • One white tealight candle
  • One moonstone crystal, or any small stone that feels meaningful
  • A notebook or scrap of paper

The ritual

Prepare your coffee as you normally would. Add each ingredient slowly, giving it a simple meaning as it enters the cup.

As you stir, say:

I do not need to see the entire path.

I choose the next honest step.

What is mine to carry will become clear through attention.

If using a white tealight, light it before drinking and let it represent clarity rather than certainty. If using a crystal, place it beside the cup as a physical reminder of your intention. Neither is required.

Take three unhurried sips. After the third, write one sentence beginning with:

Today, I will give my attention to...

Keep the sentence small enough to live rather than merely admire.

Pantry-magic note

The three ingredients are symbolic, not prescriptive. You may substitute an equivalent pantry item, but keep the finished spell to exactly three ingredients. The ritual belongs to the attention you bring, not to perfect supplies.
